Russell has been an owner and manager in the mortgage origination business in the mid-Atlantic area for over 25 years. After spending most of his career at Charter One Bank and its predecessor companies, in 2000 Russell founded Beacon Mortgage, as a division of a Washington, D.C. area community bank. Beacon Mortgage was eventually acquired by American Home Bank, following which Russell oversaw its entry into the Reverse Mortgage business as American Home Bank Reverse, a full FHA Direct Endorsement underwriter and funder. In 2010, American Home Bank Reverse was acquired by Graystone Tower Bank.
